The Lamy Aion is one of Lamy’s newer models, having been released in 2017. It’s an aluminum pen that highlights the company’s mastery of materials, combining brushed aluminum, bead blasted aluminum, and polished steel into a handsome pen.
The Aion is a larger pen with a minimalist aesthetic and a sub-$65 street price that makes it quite hard to resist. It’s quite wide and has a large, satisfying feel to it.
The rollerball version of the Aion uses Lamy’s M63 rollerball refill. The pen can also accomodate a Pilot G2 gel type refill with a shim at the end to extend the refill to the length of Lamy’s propriety design.
Having been released for some years now the pen has not taken off in popularity and it’s become clear that the Aion will not be one of Lamy’s iconic pens, like the Lamy 2000 or Safari.
Lamy Aion Cap Problems
Early versions of the Aion rollerball and fountain pen had issues with a loose cap. The cap didn’t fall off, but it would wiggle on the pen in an annoying way, which was not in keeping with a pen in this price range.
There was no official recognition of the problem and not official update to the Aion, but the issue seems to have been alleviated in later version of the pen. It might have been a problem with some select units as well, or a problem with an early production run, which was quickly addressed — it’s quite hard to tell from anecdotal accounts online.
