Noodler’s Black, also known as “Bulletproof Black” or “Waterproof Black”, is a pure black ink sold in a 90 ml glass bottle.
The ink is similar, though less popular, than Noodler’s Heart of Darkness black ink, which is one of our picks for the best black fountain pen ink. Noodler’s Black is a permanent ink that is extremely water-resistant.
Noodler’s Black vs. Heart of Darkesss
Waterproof Black is typically* darker than Heart of Darkness and a bit better behaved. That is to say that it works better when not using fountain pen-friendly paper and dries slightly more quickly. Neither ink is as black as X-Feather, but both dry more quickly.
Noodler’s Black vs. X-Feather
These two inks are extremely similar, almost the same in fact. The main differences are that X-Feather dries more slowly and feathers less on copy paper and newsprint. Bulletproof Black is better behaved on cheaper papers than most Noodler’s black inks, but X-Feather is still better. X-Feather tends to be a little blacker, but this can vary batch to batch.
*We often use “typically” with Noodler’s inks because each batch is handmade and there is some variation from one to the next.
