The Sailor 1911 is the company’s most famous fountain pen and the mainstay of their brand. It’s normally seen as a $150-ish cartridge converter with a 14K gold nib, but it can be found for well under $100 on Amazon if you are OK with a Japanese import with limited warranty protection ($127.52) or the price can swing north to around $300 if you want a Sailor 1911 Realo piston-filler with a 21K nib from an authorized dealer.
The Sailor 1911 is the standard 14K fountain pen in Sailor’s lineup. As Sailor is one of the “Big Three” Japanese pen makers (along with Platinum and Pilot) this is a popular and important fountain pen. It’s a competitor to the Pilot Custom 74 and Platinum #3776 Century.
The 1911 is a normal-sized pen when it’s sold as the 1911S (that is, the 1911 Standard), but it’s a bit smaller then some of the pens in its class. It’s also sold as the 1911L (Large) if you want a slightly bigger pen. This introduces one of the issues with this pen: buying one is confusing! There are many, many terms thrown around once you dig into this pen, like Realo, Profit, and Promenade… just to name a few. This is why we created the Sailor Fountain Pen Buying Guide, so check that out if you want more details on the full lineup.
