The Waterman Carene is a high-end fountain pen with a metal cap, metal body, and an integrated 18K gold nib. Its design strongly resembles that of Waterman’s famous Edson fountain pen.
The Waterman Carene is a low-key pen from the outside. It has an enameled metal body that is scratch-resistant and glossy. There is an interesting cut-away on the top of the pen as well as a gold-colored top pieces with a small black inlay. This piece has no function, but gives the pen a much-needed hit of style.
The snap-on cap is almost metal and has a spring-loaded clip. The clip’s spring is rather weak though, so it has trouble retaining the pen in a pocket and doesn’t always return well, especially as the pen gets older.
The Carene is a cartridge-converter and accepts Waterman cartridges as well as standard international short cartridges.
The main selling point of the Carene is the wonderful integrated nib. The 18K nib is stiff and strong, thanks to the integrated design, but is very smooth and almost never has hard starts. It’s a very well-behaved nib that is at home both when writing extended letters and when taking quick notes.
