For decades most of Sheaffer’s pens have used the company’s “Classic” cartridge. This is a proprietary ink cartridge that will fit many, but not all Sheaffer fountain pens.
Sheaffer’s Classic cartridge has a proprietary design that only fits Sheaffer pens. Further, Sheaffer pens can only use this cartridge.
Over the years it’s been available people have noted that this cartridge is basically interchangeable with a standard international ink cartridge except for that fact that the Sheaffer has a slightly wider aperture that connects to the pen. People have taken to getting an empty standard international cartridge, widening the hole a bit with a nail or pen tip, and then using it in place of Sheaffer’s design. This is not a difficult operation and it is a reasonable thing to do if you have no other option.
