The Rotring Trio is a slick, modern multi-pen that is the predecessor to the Newton Trio (the pen often misidentified as the Rotring 600 Trio). It’s also a modern take on the rare, expensive Rotring Quattro Executive. The good news is that the Rotring Trio is neither rare — it’s easily findable online for sale — nor is it expensive, with a retail price of about $30.
The Rotring Trio drops the classic hexagonal design of the Rotring 600 and Newton lines for a sleek, modern cylinder. It’s smooth with slick, with a flat matte color to it, like a pen from the future. It’s also bland, bordering on sterile, with very little character. This is a pen for people who like design, but not necessarily pens. A pen for people who primarily write on tablets — in fact you can put a stylus as one of the three options if you are so inclined.
The Rotring Trio comes with red, black, and 0.5 mm pencil inserts. The refills are D1 sized, which means there are lots of options if you want to swap the perfectly-adequate Rotring refills for something from another brand.
Ultimately, this is a handsome, well-made pen, but it’s a boring one with little to differentiate it from the competition except for its build quality. And that quality is hidden away underneath a grey, nearly feature-less body. Classically Rotring’s pens have been industrial and cool, but this one misses the mark.
