The Pentel Energel Hexreform (sometimes spelled Hex Reform) is a limited run, metal Energel gel pen. It’s design is quite clean and highly reminiscent of the Rotring Newton and 600 rollerballs.
The pen is difficult to find thanks to it being released in a limited number of regions (primarily Taiwan and Singapore). It’s best located by its model: BLP665.
Some sellers have this pen for sale as the BLN665 which appears to be simply different packaging and different color options, but this isn’t entirely clear yet. We have also seen the model as BL667D, so it’s really unclear at this point which models are in the range. We do know that the Hexreform is being sold with both Pentel’s LRN (needletip gel) and LRP (permanent gel) refills.
The Hexreform pen is sold with a 0.5 mm tip and uses the Pentel LRN5 needle tip gel refill.
Pentel Energel Hexreform Review
With a retail price of about $20 (600 TWD) the Energel Hexreform would be a fantastic addition to Pentel’s lineup. With current prices being more like $35-50 after shipping to the US and mark-ups due to the pen’s limited edition nature, the verdict is still out on this pen.
There is no question that this is an interesting, nicely made pen. Pentel isn’t really known for its lower-end metal pens, aside from the Energel Alloy, but this pen makes it clear that the company has potential to do a lot more. The most similar pen in Pentel’s US lineup would be the Pentel Libretto, which lacks much of the Hexreform’s style.
There are some shortcomings with the pen, most notably its small diameter and inability to work with Schmidt and Pilot rollerball refills, but it’s still cool option.
