Robert Oster Fire and Ice is a blue fountain pen ink that is known for its red shading. The ink is handmade in Australia and sold in a 50 ml plastic bottle.
Fire and Ice (sometimes written as “Fire & Ice”) is one of Oster’s signature inks, is often talked about for it’s nice blue-green tone and heavy amounts of shading. It’s close to a teal color but is blue enough that it’s not considered a teal or turquoise.
When drying in concentration there is a distinct pink sheen to the ink, which is exactly why the ink has the name it does. This heavy sheen ink is popular with people who are looking for a lot of color variation in the ink and something that really pops off the page in a way that only fountain pen ink can.
In smaller nib sizes Fire and Ice can seem like a rather dull blue ink that is nearly a turquoise but when used in larger nibs and/or in drops and artistic uses it can really become something special. The ink needs to dry slowly to get the full sheen from it, so it’s prone to smudging and other drying issues. The ink has good shading as well.
These qualities mean it’s not great for office use but it’s a pretty reliable writer and is fine for journaling and other writing tasks. Legibility is good, but not great, and people who want this color for more serious general use might want to consider Lamy’s Pacific Blue ink or Pilot Shin-ryoku.
