The J. Herbin refillable rollerball is a rollerball pen that uses fountain pen ink.
This reasonably priced pen is a simple, plastic rollerball that accepts standard international short fountain pen cartridges as opposed to using standard rollerball refills. Some descriptions say the pen uses only Herbin refills, but that’s nice the case as it’ll accept any standard short one. The pen is sold only in Fine and Medium tips, so options are limited.
While clearly filling a niche, the pen has mixed reviews from users. It’s often noted to have a scratchy writing tip though this seems to vary a lot based on the ink and individual pen.
The pen is quite small, at about 4 inches when uncapped. This is an odd choice as the pen isn’t sold as a mini or pocket pen, even though it’s basically the same size as the Kaweco Sport.
Before you buy, here are two frequently asked questions:
- Does it include ink cartridges? No! You will need to buy your own international standard short fountain pen cartridges.
- Can it be converted to an eyedropper? No! There are safety holes in the top of the pen.
