Leuchtturm1917 Drehgriffel Ballpoint Pen

The Leuchtturm1917 Drehgriffel is a twist-top ballpoint pen, first released in 2020, said to be modeled after pens from the 1920s.

Drehgriffel is German for “twist stylus,” which properly describes the form of the pen. The official name of the pen is the Drehgriffel Nr. 1 but most references to it online are simply as the Drehgriffel.

This is a small, metal pen with a twist mechanism on top that extends and retracts the refill. The design is similar to that of the Kaweco Liliput and the Baron Fig Squire, both of which are more expensive then the $25 Drehgriffel. The popular Retro 51 Tornado uses a similar design, but it has a clip where the first two — and the Drehgriffel — do not.

The pen includes a Parker-style G2 refill with blue ink, known as the Leuchtturm1917 Flow refill. The refill is also sold in black, but that has to be purchased separately from the pen.
