The Pentel EnerGel-X is a popular gel pen that has won over many fans because of its excellent, quick-drying ink. The body is entirely plastic and not particularly notable, but it’s comfortable, affordable, and has a lot of availability in the US, Japan, and other places. The Energel-X is specifically a retractable version of the Energel series.

Interestingly, the Energel-X is sold as both in both a normal (conical) writing tip and as a needle-point pen. Most pens would have a different model if the writing tip were to change, but Pentel doesn’t make the distinction in this case. The Energel-X is sold in 0.3 mm, 0.5 mm, 0.7 mm, and 1.0 mm sizes, but not all tips are sold in all sizes!
The Energel-X has a rubber grip with a wave pattern that is used across a number of the pen in the Energel line. The barrel, top button, clip and all other components of the pen are made of plastic. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but the pen isn’t quite as nice as the Energel Infree, which has a metal clip, top button, and front cone. The metal makes the Infree look and feel somewhat nicer then the standard Energel pens.
Some of the best features of the Energel-X body include a rubber grip, a wide diameter body, and a wide button that is comfortable even when repeated pressed. This is a good pen for writing for long periods of time because of the ink drying times as well as the wide, easy to hold grip. Another perk is that the pen is made of over 80% recycled materials, so it’s eco-friendly as well.
Like the rest of the Energel pens (non-multi-pens to be exact) the Energel-X uses Pentel’s LR line of gel refills. Typical refills you’d find in this gel pen are the LR5 (0.5 mm), LR7 (0.7 mm) and LR10 (1.0 mm). All the LR, LRN, and LRP refills are interchangeable with one another, depending on if you want a standard gel refill, a needle tip, or a permanent gel refill.
