Wing Sung 3013 Fountain Pen

The Wing Sung 3013 is an affordable, vacuum-filler fountain pen. This is a Chinese fountain pen that is much more affordable than typical vac fillers.

This fountain pen was initial introduced with a price of right around $4 and, in the US at least, typical sold through Ebay, AliExpress, and Etsy marketplaces.

This is a relatively large and heavy fountain pen that could be the Penbbs 456, which is another large Chinese fountain pen. The quality of the 3013 is of a reasonable high — or about average — quality for a Chines fountain pen and it’s a closer comparison to the Wing Sung 699.

The vacuum mechanism of the 3013 works well, but the cap comes on and off in a slightly awkward manner, which makes it seem a bit rough around the edged. Also there is a lasered-on logo on the cap band where the font and print quality looks rather low, despite the rest of the pen being comparatively better.

The pen is wide in the middle and on the heavy side, at around 23 grams when empty. This gives it a large, slightly ungainly feel that takes a little getting used to, but it pleasant enough. There are some design flourishes, like facets on the cap, which are slightly reminiscent of the Twsbi Diamond 580 while the wide middle reminds me of the Twsbi Vac 700R.

The nib is silver-colored and not at all fancy. It is sold in an EF and F (tested). It’s a good writer with reasonable smoothness and good reliability. The nib has a surprising amount of spring and can get very wide if some pressure is applied. As with most Wing Sung fountain pens, the nib is better than it has any right to be at this price.

The pen doesn’t post, which isn’t really an issue with a fountain pen of this size (at least for me) but this might be a downside for some buyers.

Interestly, the 3013 vacuum mechanism doesn’t have a forward seal. This means it doesn’t dry out as you write and need to be replenished, like a typical vacuum filler. This is convenient as a writer, but it means the pen will be more prone to leaking when there is a change in air pressure or elevation.

Wing Sung 3013 Review

If you want to try out a vacuum-filling fountain pen and you prefer heavier pens, the 3013 is a good way to go. It’s not the best built Chinese fountain pen, but it’s good-looking and enjoyable to write with. It has some downsides, like a awkward cap screw-on process and the lack of a second interior seal, but it does its job well.

If you want a higher-end vacuum filler you can check out the offers from Penbbs, which will range from $20-$50, instead of under $10 for the 3013.
