The Tru Red Rollerball Pen is a wide rollerball pen that is sold in office-friendly multi-packs.
The Tru Red Rollerball is a liquid rollerball pen with a window for seeing the ink fill level. The pen is plastic with a snap-on cap and a metal clip. It is not refillable. They sell for a little under $2.00 each, which is good for a disposable rollerball but not too far from the competition.
The pen is sold with standard conical tip as well as with needle tip if you want more precise writing. It is sold with black, blue, red, green, and purple ink.
The rollerball is sold in a 0.5 mm writing tip which, like any rollerball, writes a good deal wider than that. It’s not a wet writing rollerball, but it does offer the fountain pen-like smoothness you’d want to see in a pen like this.
Tru Red says that chose a rollerball for its consistency and low-fatigue writing. Having previously released ballpoint and gel pens, the Tru Red Design team wanted to create a pen with a “free flowing ink system” like this one.
This pen is a good writer but the main qualities that set it apart from the other pens are the market are its large size and that fact that it’s a the companion pen to the Tru Red Note-Taking Guidance Collection.
A Wide Rollerball Pen
This is a wide pen, which immediately makes it stand out against the competition. In an email response the Tru Red design team noted that the width was intentional — they found it requires less strength to hold a wider pen. People are writing less than they used to, which means hand fatigue sets in earlier than it would have in years past. This can be minimized by increasing the width of the writing instrument, thus allowing people to write longer.
The team found that the hand fatigue issue is particularly notable with adults over the age of 65 and with college students, who intermittently need to do considerable amounts of writing.
